Elliot wishes he could go to Summer Tournament

Elliot is annoyed he's going to back to Christchurch because he is going to miss the summer tournament at the school. We are going to play ultimate frisbee, volley ball and play ball, we all are excited about the three different games because they will be so much fun.

Lily and Laura's Hopes For Summer Tournament

Lily,"I can't wait until Summer Tornament, it was great fun last year and I hope it is going to be as great as last year. My goals are to join in more with the sports that we are going to play and just have fun while doing it, also to score a point for my team!"

Laura,"I am quite nervous about Summer Tornament because I am not very good at catching or throwing a Frisbee, batting or hitting and serving in volleyball. But I know that I will only get better with practice and to just have fun. I hope to score a goal (if possible for me) and to become better and volleyball especially."

Term 1, Week 9 Newsletter/Home Learning....

Well, a bit late putting the newsletter on the blog site this week students, however you got it on time!
I am really impressed with the creative writing I am seeing during our 10 minute sessions and you obviously enjoy the visual prompts from the 'imagine a day' book. Please remember to bring in your money and returns for summer tournament this week, as you have this fun tournament next week and we need help with transport and support on this day.
Have a superb rest of the week...

Flynn's take on Summer Tournament...

Hi I'm Flynn and I am looking forward to Summer Tournament this year.
I would like to think that it will be fun and that it will have good rules on the games.
The best game in it that I like is Play Ball, a smaller version of Softball.
I hope that Mapua School goes well in this event and everyone tries there best.
We will be against all the schools that are in the Mot Cluster.

Georgia and Jasmin's thoughts on The Summer Tournament

The Summer Tournament is only six days away and Mapua is determined to get a placing, so watch out other schools here we come! This event is for year 7 and 8 students only and just a fun day away from school. For this sporting event there are some that like the different sports being played but some that don't. The three sports that we are participating in are, Ultimate Frisbee, Play ball (a modified version of Softball) and Volleyball. Most of the schools in the tasman region put 2 to 3 teams in to compete. The Summer Tournament has been running for a least 10 years now and it will hopefully be running for many more considering that so many people enjoy it.

Summer sports thoughts

In about one week the summer tournament of 2011 is coming up, this fun event comes up once a year and We compete with all of the schools from Mapua to motueka like Upper Moutere, Wakefield and lots more.
These are our opinions on the up coming event:
Max: ''It's going to be an occasion of general goodwill''.
Jake: ''I think it's going to be another fun exciting tournament with great games and activities''.

Isaac and Owen's thoughts about Summer Tournament

We are looking forward to all the activities at the Summer Tournament next Tuesday. Especially the play ball. We have practiced a lot of both Volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee. We would like to win at least one game. Last year we did fairly well. So hopefully we will do great this year.Remove Formatting from selection

Summer Tournament

This years annual summer tournament is coming up and we are practicing hard and are looking forward to the challenge.

"My favorite game is ultimate frisbee and I can't wait to play it with my team."
Kelly

"I can't wait until the summer tournament, my favorite game is ultimate frisbee."
Emily

"Play Ball is fun, but it is not my best sport and I still need to work on my skills for this game."
Kelly

"I still need to work on my volleyball skills but I hope I can get better before the summer tournament."
Emily

"I am alright at volleyball, but I need to work on my serving and hitting, so I pretty much have to improve on everything to achieve my goal of being good at volleyball."
Kelly

"I do not enjoy playing play ball, but I am happy to play with and for my team and I am sure it won't be that bad."
Emily

Hannah And Sophies Summer Tournament Excitements

Sophie and I are in the same summer tournament team which we are really excited about but we are more looking forward to playing all the summer sports which includes volleyball, play ball and ultimate Frisbee. We are all going to be all we can and try our hardest to win against the other clusters but still have lots of fun at the same time!!! So we are hoping to have lots of fun and come back with smiles on our faces.

By Hannah And Sophie

The Exciting Upcoming Summer Tournament

The upcoming Tuesday, we will be traveling to Goodman's Reserve, Motueka to play in the Summer Tournament. The Summer Tournament is a fun and exciting event where all of the schools in the Motueka area come together and compete in three different sports. The three sports are Playball, Volleyball and Ultimate frisbee. All the schools pick teams to compete against each other. The team that wins at all the different sports wins the whole event. We are all busy practicing our skills for the tournament. Our class is very motivated and we think we will do well this year in the exciting Summer Tournament.

Kelly's assembly goals

I want to...
be able to dance effectively.
make people impressed and want to learn dance like we do.
be able to be proud of myself at the end of the day.
be confident and look like I know what I am doing.
These are my goals for the Rm 11 assembly.

Emily's goals

I want to be able to do a dance effectively and have a smile on my face at the same time.

My assembly by Anne

We have created a really good dance, I hope our assembly will get better and people will like it.

My Goals - By Georgia

For room 11's assembly I hope to complete the dance to a high standard and hopefully without any mistakes or without having to look at anybody for a promt. To acheive this goal I will practice the dance moves at home and put my best effort into every action I do.

Sophie's goal for Room 11 Assembly

My goal is to do a Dance with Hannah and to be all we can in our Dance. We are aiming to use the elements to make our Dance more interesting! Being confident is also another big part of performing a Dance. So if we do all of this our Dance will hopefully be very successful and everyone will enjoy it!!!

Dylan's Goals...

Hi I'm Dylan
My goal for assembly is to play the electric gutair with my friend Flynn.
To show my talent off at assembly.
I would also like to show other talents, but can't tell you now! I would like to but you will have to wait for the assembly to finish.

Assembly

I have a couple goals for our assembly here they are:
  • To not make a mistake when I perform the dance or mumble when I talk if I am talking for the assembly.
  • To have fun at the assembly and take part in everything I can be in for the assembly by taking a risk.
This is what I am doing for the assembly:
  • I am dancing and the type of dance I am dancing is hip-hop and country.
  • I am playing guitar with Isaac.
By Kaleb
Hi i am Flynn from Room 11
My goal for assembly is to play the drums to a song with my friend Dylan
while he plays the Guitar.
I would like to show my talent off at assembly.
I would also like to show my other talents but i can't show you now.

Let's dance....

The students in Room 11 are very fortunate to have Mrs Bibby-Smith on a Tuesday who takes them for literacy, numeracy and more importantly 'The Arts' aspect of the curriculum (as Mrs Stephens is only up to stick figures!).
For 'The Arts' this term we are focusing in on DANCE and the following photos show the students being creative with line dancing, which was lots of fun, as well as challenging us to be co-ordinated and on the beat.....

Pre-Post Of Lit Quiz

This year Mapua School has two teams entering the annual Lit Quiz Competition. We have our best scorers organized into Team A and Team B, we also have our two reserves which will be watching and gaining experience for next year. The reserves are free to do the quiz to see what their score would have been. We are leaving at 9:00am, so I need to go, but I will post again after the Lit Quiz and tell you how we went.

Camp Totaranui 2011

On the 24 February 2011 Room 11 set off to enjoy the experience of a lifetime!!! We set off for Kaiteriteri at 9:30 and caught the boat at 10:45 we did a tour around the bays and saw split apple rock and a lot of other interesting and spectacular sights. When we arived we participated in a lot of really fun activities for a whole five days. The walk to Separation point was tiring but it was worth it for the amazing sights we saw. The swim was really greeted with enthusiasm as it refreshed us and cooled us off!!! Some of the favourite activities were spotlight, kayaking, fear factor and the swim at Goat bay with the MASSIVE waves. The whole camp was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and will stand out in our memories for the rest of our lives.

New students in Mapua School

As you might already know there are some new students in Mapua school but you might not know how many. There is about 28 new students in Mapua School (all from Christchurch) and about 8 of them are in our class. Any way, they are all pretty cool and all of them fit in really well and all of them are unique. So it is a big privilege to have them all!

SOPHIE & BRIE

Sophie from Mapua & Brie from Christchurch.
New Friends! :)
Brie has just moved up from Christchurch. She is the one on the right.
Sophie has been at Mapua for all her primary years! And she is on the left.
Now we are great friends.LOL. When Brie goes back to Christchurch she will miss her new friends. :)

Moving to Mapua school!

Hi I'm Grace, I am from Christchurch, but recently I have moved to Mapua to get away from all the after-shocks, falling buildings, rubble, and devastation that the most recent Christchurch has coursed.
I am now going to school here, at Mapua. I have come from Casebrook Intermediate, so as you can imagine it is quite a swop to this little school. Mapua school is very different from Casebrook, it feels weird not wearing a uniform, but its good not having to tie up my hair for school everyday! Casebrook is a school only for year 7's and 8's, so it seems really odd having lots of little kids around me again!
The people here are all really friendly and easy to talk to. Everyone has been soo helpful and welcoming! I've made some new friends that have been really good showing me around the school, and where everything is.
It has been a wonderful experience coming here, meeting new people and doing things i haven't done before. It has also been a wonderful learning experience too!
I will never forget thing school or any of the wonderful people in it!
I hope I will get the opportunity to visit again some time.
Grace

Moving to Mapua

I am from Christchurch. I have recently moved to Nelson to get away from the Christchurch earthquake. Previously I went to Vila Maria College. It has been really interesting moving to Mapua School. Everyone here was really welcoming and I must say I think that this school is very modern compared to my other school. The desks are really cool with the slide out thingies. I think tha Mapua school is really cool and I really like it here!
Sarah

Hi, Im Caleb from Christchurch

First, I moved to Christchurch from England, just in time for a tsunami warning. Then, the first earthquake happened, which scared everyone, but luckily didn't kill anyone. Now, there is the latest earthquake, which is feared to have killed 240 people, & has caused around $15 billion worth of damage. This time, we'd had enough, so we decided to move. It was really hard, because I'd got so settled in there, & I'd started a load of clubs & stuff, but we decided we had to get away from the constant shakes! So we moved up here to Mapua, & I love it here! Everyone's really friendly, & the school rocks!

Camp:Totaranui Style-Walking Edition

"Come on guys its 7am!" yelled our teacher Mrs S.
"Go away" I moaned, I am not a happy person when I don't get enough sleep. I was not in the mood for waking up and , of course, I was not looking forward to Tuesday's activity-walking to Separation Point. I was looking forward to being there, but not getting there. Going downhill was my favourite part, but then I remembered that I would have to go up them on the way back, and that was NOT a happy thought!

We took a group shot and started off on the long trail to Separation Point. It was all going fine and I was feeling positive, until I saw the first uphill part of our journey. It felt as if my confidence had ran back to the homestead and left nothing but fear behind. All of a sudden, I felt jealous, I wished I could've gone back to the homestead!

The first slope was torture and every time I turned a corner, the trail would continue uphill. Until, at last, the pain ended and we were going down, down, down to Anapai for morning tea. When we finally arrived, we ate, and then some of us wandered around and looked for cool shells and rocks in the sand.Emily even found the skeleton of a seahorse, which looked amazing! The fun couldn't last and we set off again, sooner than we thought, we found ourselves walking onto a beautiful beach only to be disappointed that it wasn't Mutton Cove, the place we would have lunch. We took another group shot and headed away, along the beach.

Mutton Cove was another beach along the way, and we had our lunch in a little camping area. By now, we each had a lot of shells or stones that we could take home as a memory of the fun we had at Totaranui. We had a little rest and played around with our friends before setting off to our final destination: SEPARATION POINT!!!

Over rocks and hills, down steep slopes and across sandy beaches, we slowly made our way to Separation Point. It was possible to taste the excitement in the air as we made our way down the final slope to where we were heading, our whole topic for the day:Separation Point. At last, the long wait was over and we could sit and enjoy the magnificent views and enjoy the satisfactory from our hard work.

There were seals, stags, and great views, we even saw some orcas way out on the horizon. So, I guess it was a nice view, right? Yes, it was just so amazing, by far the best school camp, well, apart from the walking!

Then we had to head home. On the way we stopped at Anapai for a well deserved swim, and, one by one, we headed off in groups of 4. We were glad when we were nearing the homestead, tired by our days work. The evening came closer and closer as we neared our final destination of our long, hard journey...

Christchurch to Nelson school kids

As you may know, Christchurch was struck with another booming 6.3 earthquake on tuesday last week at 12:51 . Exactly 8 days ago many people in this town had found themselves with out a home and didn't have water, electricity,or food , and at least every school in Christchurch was closed .Thousands of cantabrians decided to depart from this trembling town , many of those people being school kids as well . So here in this quiet part of New Zealand , Mapua School has accomadated at least 25 children and have welcomed them with open arms.
8 of those students can be found underneath the roof of room 11 . Sarah , Laura , Sorayya , Grace ,William ,Brie, Caleb and another Grace have joined room 11 happily . Although we have all come from different parts of Christchurch, we can relate to each other about the recent devastations there. Some students with smashed houses , and others just without power, all trying to escape the shocks that seem to repeat themselves every hour or so . This is Sorayya and Grace , saying how great it is to escape Christhurch , if only for a week, but how much Mapua school has welcomed us .

Holidays!!!

Everyone had great holidays! Well at least I think, some people went over sea's, others went around New Zealand. I went to Christchurch and got to experience some of the 2 big after shocks. They were scary!! One of them was when we went to bed. We had one in the morning so I woke Daniel to tell him but all I got was a slap in the face for waking him up! And I went to Palmerston North to visit all my family which was really cool because we hadn't seen them in ages! On the way there and back we made a few detours to visit some other friends we hadn't seen in ages too!

Holidays over....Term 4 here we come! =]

All of us have had great holidays but now its the first week of Term 4 and lots of students are looking forward to the many exciting opportunities that we all get to take part in. Such as Whenua Iti, Pet day, Disco, Year 8 BIG day out, I could go on and on...
As this is the Year 's last Term here at Mapua, we want to make it our best Term yet :)

Winter Tournament

Our hopes is to win at least more than 3 games. As we are in the Senior grade we have to step up as it is going to be tough, but it would be worth it even if we lose.
Winter Tournament will be a great experience for those who don't do netball already.

WINTER TOURNEY GOALS!♥

Heya Room 11! Its Lid and Luc here!

So, goals for winter tourney, we are both in football, so we both hope to play our hardest and maybe get a few wins! I am sure all of our teams are going to do well, we have some of the Mapua districts netball team members in our netball team so we will do good in that, rugby there are Storm, Jake and Patrick which are really good so thats great. Also in football some really good members which have been on some of the Mapua teams, and I am sure we will also excel in hockey as well. I am sure everyone will win some games and we will come back with some good results! See you for now
Lid and Luc ☀☺✰

Our winter Tournie Hopes and Dreams

Next week the senior syndicate are going to play different sports we chose football. Our hopes are to take the victory and glory we think that, that with the star signings of Nikau and Hayden with uprising stars in the making such as Jessica, Laura and Michael, we also have a new rookie trying to find his feet in the team, learning from the bench, Samuel. We also have alot of hotshots including Dan, Lydia, Lucy, Kynan and Hayley. We also have special tactics to keep us on our game such as going for a therapeutic swim in the river to relax our muscles. We dream that we can take the victory home to our fellow comrades.

Nikau and Hayden

we will win

I really want to win our soccer tournament since we won it last year but i think it might be harder than last year but it will be great if we win

All Blacks VS South Africa

All Blacks VS South Africa

I was excited
and ready to have fun
I was hoping the all blacks would win
The whistle blew
You could feel the nervous air around the stadium
Everybody was tense
And so was I
I have been looking forward to this game for weeks
The Grudge match against South Africa and New Zealand
A win for the All blacks would put them ever so closer to the Tri Nations title
I yelled out loud “Go All Blacks”
The game was exciting
And before you know it it was half time

The second half was underway
Everyone was cheering
The crowd started a mexican wave
It went around the stadium three times but then it died out
The game was getting exciting the All Blacks were starting to score points
And at the same time scoring great tries
The game was nearly over
The All Blacks got the ball and scored a great try
The All Blacks had won
Everyone in the stadium was screaming
The All Blacks had won against South Africa once again
What a great game!

Michael Rosen Poems

In our class we have been writing Michael Rosen Poems to extend our knowledge in poetic writing styles. These are our two poems.

I have always liked soccer.
No matter how hard I try
I can never let a ball go
without smashing it into the back of a goal.

Today I am trialing for a spot in the Nelson team
to go to Blenheim and have a good time.
When I hopped out of my car I thought
“ There’s not too many here, I may have a chance”
But 5 minutes later they all started to get here.
And I mean all started to get here.
There were around 60 kids there of all shapes and sizes and now I thought
“What have I gotten myself into Sam.”
(excerpt from Sam's poem)

Event: First Day of School

I looked through the big metal gates,
Dreaming and thinking about all that could be,
I looked to the left,
Looked to the right,
I saw lots of buildings stacked up nice and high,
I saw children bustling and playing,
With gleeful smiles stretched wide across their faces,
Mum opened the gate,
I cautiously walked forward,
Not knowing where to go,
Just following my feet,
I walked into one of those high buildings,
Hung my bag on an empty hook,
Pushed open the door.

It was warm and toasty inside,
Ms Dawkins greeted me at the door with a cheerful “good morning”,
I sat on the mat with my legs crossed,
Arms crossed,
Eyeing up the rest of the class,
We learn our ABC’s,
And count to three,
The bell has gone that means the day has passed,
In comes Mum to pick me up,
I look over my shoulder for a final glance,
But I know I’ll be back tomorrow though,
At that moment I knew this was the place for me.

our poems from Michael Dan

In Room 11 we've been writing Michael Rosen here are ours

here's Michaels

Day of the smiggle robbery
It all started one morning ..........
I was at Mapua school thinking to myself I’m gonna play with my smiggle rubber.
When it happened I look in my pencil case it was gone
That’s when the investigation began
I called my team of trained detectives, Hayden, Jordan and Myself.
We were to bring down the suspects one by one.
First we searched Hayley's desk
People saying they saw her with it and she was away
So it was a lot easier than we expected, but Hayley has helpers like Laura and Ellie .
But we got nothing nothing!
We will get them both tomorrow.
The next day Hayley I asked Where is it? I know you know were it is
“Fine here you go" she gets it out and gave it back
Every one was happy until!
"Again it’s gone again"
Hayden says it must be Hayley, Laura or Ellie again
But Jordan says no I know that they really want it, but I think somebody else has done it this time.
We will see if it was them anyway.
I was very convinced that they did it
We were busy arguing when Dan walked in as they were saying you will never find it!
When Dan pulls it out of his pocket
Yes they will never find it!
We all laughed I got it back and we enjoyed the rest of our day.

Mountain Biking
Mountain biking with the cold wind seeping through your jersey
You pedal the whole way down the mountain as you fly into the burms
throwing you around the corner as you fly
Up to the jump with a huge rush of adrenaline flowing through your body
With your heart pounding you hit the landing with another rush of relief
As you know you’ve landed successfully as you keep on peddling you come to a straight
You pedal harder as you hit the burm

You gear out
You know you’re putting in 100 % effort in
You see another burm you know you have to slow down or you are
Going to it getting closer and closer you get to it and
You lock on the brakes as you hit the burm
Slow right down but now you have to build up all you speed again
It’s not the safest sport but
It is one of the most fun things to do in your spare time

Michael Rosen Poems

For writing this term we are focusing on poems. In the past few weeks we have been researching about Michael Rosen a famous poet. Then we had to write a poem in Michael Rosen's style. Here is a poem Keegan wrote.

Michael Rosen Poems
SNOW DAY

I like snow day
I had to get up at 6:00 so that I would not miss out.
Hurry up I yelled my granddad was going to take me and Kelly to school so that some parents could take us up skiing. We arrived there in about ten minuets at school I said good bye to my granddad and I walked down to Room 8 and waited for the other people to arrived when every one had arrived they started to brief everyone witch is just a fancy word for telling everyone what to do then we got in to are cars.
It toke a long long long [now keep saying long for about an hour] and then finely we got there we had to meet in a little hut. were we had to go into our groups my instructors name was george I thought he was tall. We had to go and get are boots and skis. We had to have a 90 minuet lesion we learnt how to tern and stop then he toke us up the intermediate slope that was fun then we had the rest of the day to go up and down up and down up and down the slopes and I only fell down two times

Michael Rosen style poems!

Our class did Micheal Rosen style poems for writing.  Here are some excellent examples of them.

                                                The Last Day of Term

I’m always excited when the last bell rings

I can run outside and do all my things

I run out the gates full of glee

Finally I can run around wild and free.

I go and see my Mum and Dad

We go down to the wharf and get an ice cream

We play tag and play on the beam

C’mon I yelled

lets play on the beach

We saw a fish, it was just out of reach.

We drive on home

Past the school

That place seriously isn’t cool

Now we go past the dairy

The lady in there is really hairy

We’re back at home

I pick up the phone

I call my Granny

I say it’s the holiday!

Michael Rosen style poems ❀

Hey! Its Lid and Luc here!
This week we did some research on Michael Rosen, then we used the information that we gathered to put together an effective and descriptive poem to express our feelings through a Michael Rosen style poem. Then we had present the poems to the class, each poem that was presented had its own individuality but still was based on Michael Rosen. It was interesting to find out about how he likes to perform his poems to adults as well as children and goes around to schools to help other students express their feelings through poetic writing. It was a lot of fun in the pr0ccess.

Micheal Rosen Poems

Hi Ya room 11
I think you would all agree that the Micheal Rosen Poems were great fun to brainstorm, write, and read out to the class.
The last few days, Room 11 has been looking at the work from the famous poet, Micheal Rosen.
Our task was to design a poem that explains one of the things/moments in life when we felt happiest.
There where great Ideas like, First day back at school, Soccer or rugby Rep team try outs and loads more.
Here's an example

The Beach

I wandered by the water
and wondered what there’d be.
A crab,a fish,a tadpole
Or things to small to see.

As I looked into the water
What then did I see?
All those curious little creatures
Staring back at me!

I took a walk along sand and I meet
hermit crab I watched him scurry on the sand
to find a house that’s second-hand
He crawls in someone else’s shell
And stays because it fits him well.

We have loads more poems like this one.
It was great fun.

Michael Rosen Poems

We have made some awesome poems about what we like and what we dislike. My poem was about Easter Day which is my favorite day of the year! And here is an example of my poem, I hope you like it.
The Easter Sensation

I love Easter I’ve always have.
Every morning every night, I think about it all the time.
When its Easters eve, I think about it so hard I burst into thousand of fleas.
Now its time to say good night, good dreams are coming tonight.
Its 6:30 I can’t hardly sleep I’m so excited I can’t even speak.

Half an hour later, I’m finally awake, its easter!!!
As I hoped out of bed I can already smell the goodness of rich chocolate.
My Mum and Dad were out already out they said to me “go and have a look in the bag you'll find lollies there”.
As I opened my bag I saw nothing there, I looked around the room as I saw my dad grinning with a laugh, What had happened last night!

MICHAEL WAYNE ROSEN’S POEM’S.

MY PINK TUTU . . .

I made cake in my fluffy tutu!!!!!!
my tutu was pink as a bubblegum
I have a pink strawberry stocking that I wear
Now their covered in sticky chocolate
What do I do?
I can’t tell mom,
I can’t tell dad,
I can’t tell my sister,
I can’t tell my brother.
My tutu It’s all sticky,
It use to be pink,
But now It’s brown but yum It’s chocolate.

The cake is yummy.
It taste like creamy chocolate,
It’s so gooey
It’s stuck to my teeth
Did I bake It?
I’m not quite sure
Is It meant to be gooey?
Its very sticky I feel sick, to much chocolate
I guess I should tell mom?
Or dad,
Or my sister,
Or my brother.
Should I tell or should I not.

Micheal Rosen Poems

Micheal Rosen Poems all turned out fantastic. It took a couple of days but it was worth it. As they all were very funny or informative. I know that everyone did enjoy it. Everyone had a different topic that they did it on some examples are, Christmas, Easter, School and lots more. And here are some of our poems

POI!

The first time I touched that poi
I knew it was for me
I held it in my hands
And swung it in delight
Tried to catch it I don’t know what happened
But it hit me in the face!
I knew I wasn’t great
But I know I soon will be

As we learned
How to use the poi
I knew that it wasn't hard
and If I practiced I could be as good as good

So I practiced some moves
Over and over
Until my arm was nearly broken
And found that I can,
Use that poi

Now I can do it well
And are teaching others
In Kapahaka!

CHRISTMAS IS COMING!
It is nearly Christmas eve and everyone is really pleased. My sister and brother are ready to unwrap presents. My mum and dad are really excited but sad at the same time because all the presents have made one big bill. When us three kids went to bed dad came in and read a book to us called Jack and Jill. Man that is a great book!!!

What if.. I stay up all night? What will happen? Will I get a fright? Maybe Santa will not come and then everyone will call me a bum. Maybe I should just get some rest because tomorrow I will do my very best. I am really excited I have definitely run out of breath! Now all is left is to get a good night rest!.
